Tim's Atlanta Real Estate Blog: Freedom of Speech or Inciting a Riot?

Freedom of Speech or Inciting a Riot?

Is it still legal in this country to voice an opposing viewpoint?

Is it only legal to voice that viewpoint to others who agree with you?

Is it legal to wear a political t-shirt into a crowd of people who support an opposing candidate?

If a mob intimidates a person who is wearing a t-shirt that they don't like, should the police defend that person's right to make his statement or should the police arrest the person in order to appease the angry mob in order to keep a riot from starting?

How big of a mob does one need in order to have the police help you shut up an opposing viewpoint?

Should a person wearing an Obama t-shirt be arrested if he attended a public McCain rally?

These are a few questions I had after I watched this video.  It's making me do a lot of thinking.

uMMM...  That's kind of crazy!  It seems more like they were getting him out of there to avoid a riot, which is sad in itself...

I guess this administration is taking back the Freedom of Speech rule! We are truly in trouble!

WOW! I would like to hope that this was an isolated incident but am sure it isn't. I am actually a Obama supporter and was filled with such hope on Tuesday night. I was amazed to see how many people came together and it made me think that this man will actually be able to bring the entire country together. THEN Wednesday came around, and these hopes began to diminish. I could not believe my ears. So many people, even my immediate family were making the most malicious, hateful comments I have ever heard. These comments were being made about BOTH parties. Some of the most well educated people I have ever had the pleasure of knowing became the most dark and dooming "spreaders" of unscrupulous, unfounded accusations. It made me realize that even though we as a country have made so much progress over the years, we still have a LONG way to go. I am from the South...Mobile, AL to be exact, and it is apparent that there is a HUGE unspoken, underlying bigotry that is still evident in southern culture. The results of this election has been the catalyst that has prompted it to rear its ugly head...and its not just from the white community. It saddens me to listen to such hateful things...and I wish for nothing more than for people to come together, no matter what political views they hold, and move this country forward. We are in uncertain times and if we continue to go after each other the way we are, we will never get out of this mess.

During the campaigns this was evident by the media coverage; don't dare ask any tough questions - look what happened to the reporter who interviewed Biden, the plumber in Ohio - he received more vetting than the canidate for asking a question...Wait until Schumer brings the "fairness doctrine" before Congress - Freedom of Speech is going to be slowly eroded away and many more will be under attack I fear....

This video is very disturbing.  I did not hear about this and I am from the area.  I understand that the initial intentions of the officers were perhaps to get him away without inciting a riot, however the guy with the shirt appeared to be cooperating and trying to get to his card which was in the other direction.

I did attend a public McCain rally and there were a lot of protesters who supported Obama.  None were arrested.

This is very sad and very wrong to say the least.

To top it off my 4 yo daughter walked in the room while I was watching the video and asked why the cops were there and if that was a "bad guy".  How on earth can I answer her questions?

Comrad....Why is anyone surprized at these events?  The media nor do the American people care!  Obama personally threw off his plane any reporters whose newspaper had not endorsed him a week or so prior to elections.

There are a few things here...

  • If the roles were reversed, there would be protests in the street about how the Obama supporter was bullied and intimidated by the police.  You could expect Al Sharpton to show up... and bring cameras.
  • Wading into the crowd isn't the smartest thing that guy could have done with his evening.
  • If the guy was actually charged with anything, he should sue the city for enough money to have it renamed after him.
  • I think it is hilarious how angry the crowd of liberal, open and accepting, bi-partisans are.  Democrats and liberals are always calling out Republicans and conservatives as haters... but you never hear about them rioting when they don't get what they want.

The police were smart removing the guy from the scene.  But the biggest question would be around the actions of the police afterwards.
